What's New On These Pages: December 1994
Next month: January 1995
- Thursday 29th December
Another University Closed Day, but I still managed to update the
syndicate page supplied by Mat Newman (he's
got it down to 175 tickets now).
- Wednesday 28th December
A University Closed Day, but that didn't stop me
uploading the results for Lottery #6.
I also had the interview with the Liverpool Echo newspaper that
day of course (see below) - I will post up a transcription of the article in
the New Year. It seems a pity that our far more accomplished
HP-UX PD archive wasn't the reason for
the interview though.
- Friday 23rd December
The mention in The Guardian yesterday sparked off a journalist from
the local Liverpool Echo newspaper (hey, another newspaper I don't
read !) to contact me and arrange an interview for next week to go into an
Internet article they are publishing in the 2nd January 1995 edition of the
paper. Yes, I'll get photographed too, unfortunately, which is most annoying
because I've spent some time
disguising my picture.
All this newspaper interest is mildly amusing, because I don't even read a
newspaper ! I don't want to read yesterday's news in a tree-killing,
clumsy, expensive and biased format thank you very much. The combination of
teletext news and TV news that I read/watch is infinitely preferable and if I
really must read a newspaper, I always have the free
Electronic Daily Telegraph (but I
don't even bother reading that either).
- Thursday 22nd December
The Guardian UK newspaper published my lottery home page URL in today's
newspaper ! Fame at last [I don't think - how many people read that paper:
I don't for one...a colleague had to save a copy for me]. They probably reached
my pages via the NCSA What's New entry I submitted, but I don't know really
know how they found it because, in the true tradition of UK newspapers, they
didn't contact me before publishing the URL.
Added temporary simple gif to the top of each page, ready for when I
(hopefully) get permission to use the official logo. Added new
syndicate page supplied by Mat Newman. Added new
prize analysis page.
- Tuesday 20th December
Phoned up Camelot and got the address of the bloke I've got to write to for
permission to use the official logo. Did you know that most newspapers
never asked for official permission to use the logo ??
- Monday 19th December
Uploaded pages for
Lottery #5. Fixed misaligned winnings when
you check your numbers (some numbers were one column out).
- Wednesday 14th December
I now have an entry on the
NCSA What's New pages !
Updated latest news about this week's lottery, including the juicy
info about The Sun and The Mirror being barred from saying who the anonymous
winner of last week's lottery was ! Phoned up the 0645 number to start
haranguing Camelot about various things, including why their Player's Code
Of Practice wasn't available at retailers, despite a big sign at most
stores saying it was available for inspection. I'll be receiving the booklet
through the post soon (so the pressure worked). Also got onto their marketing
department to ask for permission to use their logo and will be sent a
"Corporate Identity Pack" thingy, so that I conform to their strict guidelines.
No chance of getting the results auto-emailed to me - both departments said
they only have internal e-mail :-( And when I mentioned the WWW, I got a
panic response at the other end (a bit too advanced methinks !). Changed my
number selection strategy slightly (no more than 2
numbers less than or equal to 12). No, I don't believe in this "3 evens and
3 odds" theory - a load of rubbish !
- Monday 12th December
Updated pages for
Lottery #4. Changed alert on
top-level page to be a newsflash instead.
- Monday 5th December
Updated various pages for
Lottery #3. Bought a second Lottery ticket
this week, because of the big rollover ! Better range handling for folks who
insist on typing out-of-range numbers in the value fields on the
Find Out If You've Won ! page - it now adjusts the
lottery # typed in to be automatically inside the legal range. Added the
rollover alert to the
- Thursday 1st December
Added Lowest, Highest and Totals lines to the
Winning Numbers page, which including the
lowest, highest and average sum of the sets of 6 winning numbers (shown in ).
